Our program is very fast-paced with a high patient load. Trainees are exposed to complex tumor biology, advanced reconstructive procedures and a broad range of laser and cosmetic procedures. Curriculum Mohs Surgery The majority of the fellowship training will be conducted at UCI’s Department of Dermatology at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, second floor. Our faculty members are certified by the American College of Mohs Surgery: Christopher Zachary, MD Patrick Lee, MD Melissa Shive, MD, MPH Aditi Sharma, MD Our faculty have received training in a range of fellowship programs. Thus UCI provides Mohs fellows with various perspectives and approaches to Mohs surgery, reconstruction and cutaneous oncology management. Our surgical curriculum includes extensive hands-on experience in Mohs micrographic surgery. Incoming fellows are given graduated surgical responsibility as they refine surgical techniques and competence. Fellows are exposed to a variety of reconstructive methods, including second intention healing, primary closure, advanced skin flaps and grafts. Our faculty close the vast majority of surgery sites. We also enjoy a close, collaborative relationship with our colleagues in otolaryngology, plastic surgery and oculoplastic surgery, and our fellows are given elective time to rotate with each of these specialties. Our faculty members perform more than 1,000 Mohs procedures each year. Each fellow typically performs about 500 cases as the primary surgeon. Laser Surgery and Cosmetics Our fellows receive extensive experience in lasers for tattoo, hair, pigment and vessel removal, non-ablative and ablative laser resurfacing, fractional erbium and CO2 lasers, tissue tightening and fat removal devices. Fellows receive exposure and training in scar revision, chemical peels, sclerotherapy, endovenous ablation, liposuction, and the use of neurotoxins and various soft tissue fillers. Fellows are involved in monthly hands-on cosmetic workshops taught jointly by department faculty and volunteer faculty members. Research and Teaching Our goal is to train fellows who contribute to the field long after completing their training. Each fellow has a half day every week to devote to academic activities, including Dermatology Grand Rounds/lectures, research projects and scholarly work. There are also opportunities to rotate with our volunteer faculty, including Jeff Klein, MD (liposuction). Fellows are expected to contribute to the training of dermatology residents and medical students and are required to give a series of lectures relating to all aspects of dermatologic surgery. Fellows are expected to be involved in a research project and to present their data at a national dermatologic meeting. Our faculty members are committed to supporting any interests our fellows wish to pursue. Annual Conferences Fellows are encouraged to attend one or more of these annual meetings. Before beginning the dermatology fellowship program, individuals must have successfully completed a four-year ACGME-approved residency program. We only accept applications through the SF Match Central Application Service (CAS). Please go to the SF Match site to apply.
