DESCRIPTION

During the Endocrinology elective, students will see patients with endocrine problems including but not limited to thyroid disease, diabetes, hypo/hypernatremia, hypo/hypercalcemia, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, pituitary disease, PCOS, osteoporosis, adrenal disease, and transgender patients. The patient is interviewed and examined by the Medical Student, who then discusses the case with Endocrinology Fellow, and then presents to the Attending Physician who goes to see the patient with the student.    

PREREQUISITES

This course is intended for third- and fourth-year students enrolled in the undergraduate medical education program at UCI School of Medicine. 

MS3s need department approval before enrolling in this rotation. 

INFORMATION FOR THE FIRST DAY

Who to Report to First Day: You will receive an email one week prior to your elective rotation with instructions of when, where and who to page. 

Location and Time to Report on First Day:  Please page the UCI Endocrinology fellow on call. Typically Monday is inpatient consults and first clinic of the week is Tuesday morning Pavilion 1, 2nd floor, at 8 AM. 

SITE: UCI Medical Center and LBVA  

DURATION: 2-4 weeks

Periods Available: The time of the course must be pre-approved by the elective director at least three months prior to the start of the course. No exceptions. 

NUMBER OF STUDENTS ALLOWED: Two per rotation. 

WHAT STUDENTS SHOULD DO TO PREPARE FOR THE COURSE

Prepare by reading the endocrinology section in Step-up to Medicine and endocrine focused topics on Up-to-Date.

MANDATORY SESSIONS

Didactic lectures are held every Wednesday at 9am, core lectures and grand rounds are held once a month.

GRADING

Medical Students are graded using the following scale: Honors (H), Pass (P), Fail (F), and Incomplete (I). For further information, please review the Grading Policy. 

You have 30 days from the date of the grade to appeal any aspect of this grade. Please contact your Clerkship/course Director should you have any questions 

Requirements for “Pass” 

To receive a grade of Pass, students must demonstrate successful performance in all the following areas:

Requirements for “Honors”

To receive a grade of Honors, students must demonstrate exceptional performance in all the following areas:

You must score at least 80% on the post-test to be considered for honors. 

Grounds for “Incomplete”

You will not be issued a grade until all elements of the course have been completed.

REMEDIATION

Remediation, if needed, will be designed by the Course Director to suit the issue at hand. 

Grounds for “Fail”: You will receive a grade of "Fail" if the requirements for passing the course have not been met. Please refer to the Grading Policy for the impact of the "Fail" grade to the transcript.
