While many are extremely healthy and active into advanced age, others present remarkable medical and psychosocial challenges. Caring for older adults requires physicians to be caring, knowledgeable, flexible, and willing to combine the finest skill and art of the medical profession. The Geriatric Medicine Elective introduces students to the wide variety of treatment and care options for older patients. Settings include ambulatory clinics- where students participate in primary care and consultation services, house calls, skilled nursing facilities and community agencies. All learners visit the Forensic Center, the first interdisciplinary agency in the country chartered with evaluating Elder Abuse. PREREQUISITES UCI students must have successfully completed their basic science curriculum. RESTRICTIONS UCI students only. Students must obtain the permission of the Elective Director prior to enrollment. COURSE DIRECTOR Dr. Sonia Sehgal is the course director for the 625F course. SITE: UCI Medical Center Senior Health Clinic, affiliated skilled nursing facilities, community-based settings for older adults, Orange County Elder Abuse Forensic Center DURATION: two to four weeks Scheduling Coordinator: UCI students, please call (714) 456-8462 to make a scheduling appointment. Periods Available: The time of the course must be pre-approved by the elective director at least three months prior to the start of the course. No exceptions.
