He explains that when you take antidepressants for months or years, the brain adapts. “Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Zoloft or Lexapro increase brain serotonin levels, and in response, serotonin receptors become less sensitive over time (a process called downregulation),” he says.
