Steve Zylius / UC Irvine Several recent studies have suggested that listening to music can either reduce the perception of pain or enhance a person’s ability to tolerate it. “Pain is a really complex experience,” said Adam Hanley, a psychologist at Florida State University who coauthored a preliminary study on mindful jazz and preferred music interventions with Sean Young, PhD, a professor of emergency medicine in the UC Irvine School of Medicine.
