News & Events: Class of 2028 White Coat Ceremony and ZotUnity

A week of first-year student orientation activities concluded with the White Coat Ceremony on August 9, 2024 at the Irvine Barclay Theater. 114 new medical students in the Class of 2028 took the Hippocratic Oath and joined the UCI School of Medicine community. Welcome these new students when you see them on campus or at the hospital.

The first week of MS1 instruction concluded with the second annual ZotUnity Day festivities on August 16, 2024. ZotUnity is a program intended to integrate multiple, pre-existing student services under one umbrella and improve the experiences of our medical students in the following domains: community, learning, wellness, mentorship and communication. Learn more about the six ZotUnity “houses” that students join from this day forward.

Follow the Zot Quality Improvements in the monthly Medical Education newsletter for additional updates that support our students.

LCME Spotlight
Standard 8: Curricular Management, Evaluation and Enhancement

LCME Standard 8 focuses on engaging in curricular revision and program evaluation activities. A primary goal of the medical school curriculum is to ensure students achieve all of the SOM program objectives and required clinical experiences. The SOM Academic Senate Committee on Curriculum and Educational Policy (CEP) leads reviews of curricular content with a broad group of faculty, staff and students during biennial course reviews, curricular phase reviews and whole curriculum reviews. The CEP considers multiple data sources to triangulate students’ progress towards competency on our program objectives, including course evaluations, USMLE Step 1 and 2CK performance and assessment of residency performance of graduates. These efforts have demonstrated that the medical education curriculum consistently maintains the high-quality standards for our students to achieve competencies and become successful residents and practicing physicians.
