LCME 2025 Accreditation Survey Visit Communication

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) will be performing an on-site survey visit for our next reaccreditation cycle from January 26-29, 2025. The LCME is the national accrediting organization for U.S. medical education programs leading to the MD degree. UCI School of Medicine received its most recent full eight-year reaccreditation in 2017.

News & Events: Open Medical School

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, the Open Medical School (OMS) event was hosted by the UC PRIME Pre-Health Pathways (UC3P) in collaboration with the UCI School of Medicine. Over 100 high school students from underrepresented backgrounds arrived on campus for a full day of hands-on medical experiences (e.g., suturing and ultrasound), physician and student panels and mentorship. OMS events remain a strong recruitment and outreach opportunity with nearly half of participants on average self-identifying as having experienced disadvantage and more than half of participants indicating a desire to apply to a medical or health professions school afterwards. For more information on the recent OMS, view the UC3P LinkedIn page.

Wishing the School of Medicine community a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday season!

LCME Spotlight
Standard 11: Medical Student Academic Support, Career Advising and Educational Records

LCME Standard 11 focuses on a medical school’s ability to provide effective academic support and career advising to all medical students. The ZotUnity program was launched to offer students a comprehensive approach to academic advising, peer tutoring, academic counseling, curriculum content review and wellness support. Through ZotUnity, students are sorted into “houses” comprised of 60-80 peers from all academic levels of undergraduate medical education. Each house is led by one of seven faculty career advisors and a dedicated set of tutors.

ZotUnity hosts monthly events to increase the sense of community amongst medical students. The response to ZotUnity has been tremendous, as evidenced by 50-100 students in attendance for sporting competitions, including ping pong and volleyball. In alignment with a holistic model of support, ZotUnity Academics will kick-off an in-person USMLE Step 1 Longitudinal Support Program with over half of second-year medical students signed up to attend the December session.
