Neuropolitics Lecture Series - The Hostility Habit: How Partisan Expectations Shape Political Conflict

Why do some partisans express hostility toward political opponents while others engage respectfully across party lines? This talk argues that the answer lies not in the strength of political preferences or specific partisan identity, but rather what people believe their fellow partisans expect of them. These perceptions predict how partisans evaluate the other side and whether they are willing to engage civilly across political lines. These findings illuminate how partisan hostility is sustained and how it might be reduced.

Neuropolitics Lecture Series: Bugs in Democracy: Gerrymandering, Inequities in Voter Power and Rules of Election

Join the UC Irvine Center for Neuropolitics, featuring Sam Wang, who is a professor of neuroscience at Princeton University. Prof. Wang is also a leading figure in the quantitative study of democracy. He founded the Princeton Gerrymandering Project, which developed statistical methods to detect partisan manipulation of electoral maps. Wang has written for The New York Times and other outlets on topics ranging from autism risk to election forecasting.
