Translating Novel Computed Tomography Technologies to the Clinic

Presented by Martin Willemink, MD, MSc, PhD, FSCCT, Research Instructor, Department of Radiology, Stanford University School of Medicine

Abstract

Computed tomography (CT) is a highly successful imaging modality, which is reflected by the increasing number of exams. Despite its strengths, CT has two major drawbacks. First, patients are exposed to ionizing radiation, which is associated with increased risk of cancer. Second, soft tissue discrimination and material quantification of CT is lacking compared to other imaging modalities. Growing awareness of these issues has driven the development of new CT technologies. The focus of this talk will be on 1) quantitative CT imaging through dual-energy and photon-counting CT; 2) evaluation of image reconstruction algorithms such as deep learning and iterative reconstruction; 3) automated CT image analysis through machine learning and deep learning approaches; 4) statistical modeling to assess clinical outcome of CT technologies. During this talk, these new technologies and their clinical application will be discussed.
