They study the procedure(s) and discuss the same with the instructor before beginning to dissect. When the student feels he/she has achieved a satisfactory anatomical preparation, a presentation is made on the specimen from opening to closing, indicating step-by-step procedures and the logic for same. PREREQUISITES Medical School Gross Anatomy and core third year curriculum. RESTRICTIONS This course is intended for 4th-year UCI students. The time of the course must be pre-approved by the elective director at least 3 months prior to the start of the course. No exceptions. COURSE DIRECTOR Dr. Wikenheiser is working to understand medical education, pediatric cardiology, pediatric urology and adult urology. Scientific Focus: primary focus centers on medical and surgical education of medical students. The research focus centers on pediatric cardiology, the molecular mechanisms of coronary artery anomalies and more recently pediatric and adult urology. The student should complete the online blood borne pathogen and formaldehyde safety training at www.ehs.uci.edu. Major Exams, Assignments and Grading MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMS The student will perform detailed dissections in those areas in which he/she has an interest. The student will attend small group lectures/discussions. MTWThF - 8:00am - 12:00pm (laboratory); 1:00 - 3:00 pm (small group) GRADING The student will be graded with Honors/Pass/Fail. Evaluation of performance is based on written and/or oral examination. The student will receive a grade of Honors, Pass or Fail. The student's final grade will be submitted on the standard UCI elective form. If the student fails the elective, a grade of "F" will be permanently recorded on his/her transcript. The student can repeat the course for a second grade, however, the "F" will not be removed from the transcript. You have 30 days from the date of the grade to appeal any aspect of this grade. REMEDIATION Remediation, if needed, will be designed by the Course Director to suit the issue at hand. Grounds for “Fail”: You will receive a grade of "Fail" if the requirements for passing the course have not been met.
