UCI Health — Irvine Rehabilitation Hospital Opening in July 2026

For more than two decades, UC Irvine’s Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) has provided care, training and research across stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and complex rehabilitation. The new UCI Health — Irvine Rehabilitation Hospital, opening in July 2026, will serve as the primary site for inpatient rehabilitation care, resident and fellow training and translational research for the UC Irvine PM&R community.

Clinical Care

Physiatrists from our department will work with a multidisciplinary team of therapists, rehabilitation nurses, neuropsychologists and case managers to lead inpatient acute rehabilitation clinical care at the new hospital. Patients will receive a minimum of 15 hours of therapy per week with daily physician oversight.

PM&R Services

Education & Training

The hospital will serve as a key clinical site for our residency program, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship and medical student elective rotations. Trainees will work alongside faculty across a broader and higher-volume case mix than was previously available in a single setting.

Research

The hospital will expand opportunities for clinical and translational research in rehabilitation, including stroke recovery, brain and spinal cord injury, neurorehabilitation technology and outcomes research. Faculty interested in conducting studies at the new site are encouraged to contact the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
