Meet the Incoming School of Medicine PhD Students
Introducing the newest cohort of 36 PhD students in Biomedical Sciences for this fall. These students will conduct research under the guidance of their advisors in one of our five PhD degree-granting departments: Anatomy & Neurobiology, Biological Chemistry, Experimental Pathology, Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, and Physiology & Biophysics.

UCI researcher receives New Vision Research Award
Lingxuan Chen, PhD, was one of two recipients of the New Vision Investigator Award, receiving a $100,000 grant to support her research project in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Chen is a project scientist in the Beier Lab, Department of Physiology and Biophysics.

UC Irvine-led team finds that compound in rosemary extract can reduce cocaine sensitivity
A team of researchers led by the University of California, Irvine has discovered that an antioxidant found in rosemary extract can reduce volitional intakes of cocaine by moderating the brain’s reward response, offering a new therapeutic target for treating addiction.

UC Irvine researchers investigate muscle cell development in muscular dystrophy
Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FHSD) is one of the most common muscular dystrophies, which results in progressive weakening of skeletal muscles. Now, a new study published in Genome Research by UCI School of Medicine researchers utilize cutting-edge single-cell spatial transcriptomics to analyze gene expression in individual nuclei and myocytes of disease and control samples to determine how the disease state develops during human skeletal myocyte differentiation.
