Sabrina Mir Celebrates Community Connections Heading into Match Day

One hundred and five students in the UC Irvine School of Medicine will participate in Match Day on March 20, 2026, opening envelopes to learn where they will begin their residency. One of them is Sabrina Mir, drawing on her strong connections with the local community as she heads into her future career as a physician.

“I am the product of Indian immigrants to the United States who ultimately settled in Fullerton,” says Mir, who graduated from Troy High School in 2017. “Much of my upbringing was shaped by the Fullerton community.” She recalls learning how to swim at the Janet Evans Swim Complex, walking through the weekly farmers market in Downtown Fullerton to buy honey sticks, and spending Fourth of July evenings watching fireworks at the Fullerton High School Stadium.

She earned her BS in biochemistry from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles but returned to Orange County for medical school. “UC Irvine holds a special place in my journey,” says Mir. “It was the first medical school where I interviewed, and I met medical students who were deeply committed to serving the communities around them, including the very community where I grew up.”

Participating in the PRIME Leadership Education to Advance Doctoring — African, Black and Caribbean (PRIME LEAD-ABC) program helped Mir better understand how best to provide impactful care.

“PRIME LEAD-ABC equipped me with the structure, mentorship and resources to build meaningful relationships within my community and to integrate my love for education into a medical context, reinforcing my identity as a physician committed to advocacy and service,” says Mir. “Being able to learn from and serve patients in the same place where I grew up has been incredibly meaningful.”

She stresses that service and education have been integral parts of her experience as a medical student. One example is her participation in the PRIME LEAD-ABC Health Fair.

“We partnered with a local church in Anaheim to host the event, which included a variety of booths focused on topics such as cardiac health, diabetes screening and dermatology,” says Mir, who volunteered at the cardiac health screening booth. She took people’s blood pressure and conducted point-of-care lipid panels to calculate their ASCVD risk score.

“We then connected participants with volunteer UCI Health cardiologists, nutritionists and primary care physicians who provided free, real-time counseling about their cardiovascular health,” says Mir. “It was incredibly meaningful to reach members of our community in this setting and help bridge gaps in care by bringing accessible health services directly to them.”

Another example is Mir’s work with the Illumination Foundation in Santa Ana. “I helped organize monthly health workshops for families experiencing homelessness,” she says. “These workshops were highly interactive, allowing individuals to ask questions about their personal health concerns.”

These experiences will guide Mir as a future physician. “Some of my most meaningful memories from medical school come from these experiences,” she says, “where I was able to apply what I was learning in the classroom and directly connect with members of my community.”

This Friday, March 20, 2026, Mir will learn where she will start her residency in internal medicine. “I’m hoping to find a residency program where I can explore the areas of medicine that interest me most while building strong ties with the community I serve.”
