Director's Welcome Curriculum & Training Meet Our Residents & Alumni Contact Us Training the Next Generation of Plastic Surgeons The UC Irvine Plastic Surgery Residency program offers rigorous, comprehensive training across the full spectrum of plastic and reconstructive surgery within a collaborative academic environment. Plastic Surgery residents train across premier institutions and develop expertise in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery while caring for a broad, complex patient population. At the core of our program is a close-knit group of residents whose excellence, curiosity, and camaraderie define our culture and prepare them to become compassionate surgeons and future leaders in plastic surgery. Our program accepts four medical students per year for a six-year educational training experience in plastic surgery. The residency program director oversees the educational portion of the program. Upon completing the program, residents are eligible for board certification. Program History The residency program was formally established in 1969 by David Furnas, MD, who built the foundation necessary to excel in plastic reconstructive surgery, microsurgery, burn care and clinical research. Residency training operated as an independent program until 2005, when the program was approved and has since been a fully integrated residency program. In 2013, long-standing Chair Gregory Evans, MD, made UC Irvine the first and only Department of Plastic Surgery in the UC system.
