Peter Chang, MD, associate professor in the Department of Radiological Sciences, has been appointed as the new director of the Institute of Precision Health (IPH), effective January 6, 2026. Chang, who joined UC Irvine in 2018, also serves as director for the Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence Research (A2IR) at UC Irvine.

As part of his new role, Chang will oversee all aspects of IPH, including strategic and financial operations. He will also unite UCI Health with the Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences and campus partners in engineering, data science and biomedical and computer sciences into a cohesive precision health initiative.

Bringing a unique perspective as both a radiologist and software engineer, Dr. Chang develops advanced deep-learning algorithms and collaborates closely with industry partners such as Nvidia, Amazon and Canon Medical.

His work also includes the development of multiple FDA-cleared AI tools now used in hospitals worldwide, underscoring a strong translational focus that will help shape the next phase of the Institute. At UC Irvine, Chang also leads the healthcare AI curriculum that trains the next generation of physician-scientists.

The School of Medicine would like to thank Dan Cooper, MD, distinguished professor of pediatrics, for his exemplary interim leadership of IPH since 2022.
