The UCI Academic Senate has named Krzysztof Palczewski, PhD, distinguished professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and the UCI Gavin Herbert Eye Institute in the School of Medicine, as this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Senior Faculty Award for Research.  

The Senate confers this award on a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to scholarship through sustained, distinguished research. It is the most prestigious award University of California faculty members can receive from their colleagues. 

Dr. Palczewski is a distinguished biochemical pharmacologist and molecular biologist, known particularly for seminal multidisciplinary scientific contributions to the biology and chemistry of vertebrate vision and therapy of retinal diseases. Currently he is a Donald Bren Professor and Irving H. Leopold professor of ophthalmology, and serves as director of the UCI Center for Translational Vision Research.

He has received numerous prestigious international awards and is a member of both the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. National Academy of Medicine.

As the recipient of this award, Dr. Palczewski will have the honor of presenting the Distinguished Faculty Lecture during the 2024 Academic Senate Distinguished Faculty Awards Event scheduled to take place in Winter 2024. The event will feature the presentation of the 2023-24 Distinguished Faculty Awards, followed by a reception.
