In his new role as director, Monuki will provide strategic oversight of all aspects of MSTP, including admissions, student advising, program activities and NIH grant administration. Monuki, a UCI Health board-certified anatomic pathologist and neuropathologist, has been part of the UC Irvine School of Medicine faculty for nearly 25 years. He directs both the Neuropathology Core for the UC Irvine Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the UCI Clinical Laboratories, among other leadership roles. His NIH-funded research centers on forebrain development, stem cell biology and neurodegenerative diseases, with his lab pioneering the derivation of choroid plexus cells from pluripotent stem cells.

Monuki earned his MD and PhD from UC San Diego MSTP. He completed his residency in anatomic pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a fellowship in neuropathology at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.

The School of Medicine would also like to express its sincere gratitude to Al Goldin, MD, PhD, for his leadership and dedication over the past 33 years as MSTP director, and for securing the recent renewal of the NIH T32 award for the UCI MSTP.
