Alpesh N. Amin, MD, MBA, professor and Thomas & Mary Cesario Chair Emeritus of Medicine at the UC Irvine School of Medicine, has been selected to receive the 2027 Robert H. Williams, MD, Distinguished Chair of Medicine Award from the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), which comprises more than 14,000 members. The award recognizes a physician who has demonstrated outstanding leadership as chair of a department of internal medicine. The Williams award honors exceptional administration, leadership and overall contributions to academic internal medicine, and is the highest honor from the Association of Professors of Medicine (APM), which is part of AAIM. Amin served as chair of  the Department of Medicine for 16 years (2008-2024) at UC Irvine.

The Williams award will be presented at the 2027 APM Winter Meeting in February 2027 in Savannah, Georgia. The annual meeting brings together chairs, academic leaders and faculty from departments of internal medicine at medical schools and teaching hospitals across the country. The Alliance Awards celebrate excellence across academic internal medicine, and Amin’s peer-recognized achievement reflects his outstanding leadership, dedication and impact.

“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from my colleagues in academic internal medicine,” says Amin. “Serving as chair of the Department of Medicine for 16 years was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I am grateful to the faculty, staff, trainees and colleagues who made it such a meaningful chapter of my career. This recognition reflects the talents and dedication of the members of the Department of Medicine and their work to advance all our missions across the University, the School of Medicine, the Health enterprise and the community. I share this award and honor with them. I look forward to continuing to support our department, our school and the next generation of physicians and leaders.”
