Notes

  • Each Rotation Block is one month long.
  • Clinical Sites
    • Site 1: UC Irvine
    • Site 2: VA
    • Site 3 CHOC (Children's Hospital Orange County)
  • There are weekly half-day continuity clinics throughout the entire training (PGY2-4) years (for 40 clinics per year) except when on vacation, night float or ICU.
  • Research, a Quality Improvement Project and attendance to at least one national conference is required throughout the training.
  • Inpatient rotations (Stroke/General/Night Float) include consults in the emergency room, primary service and neurocritical care unit with exposure to a very broad spectrum of neurological patients.
  • Residents are given four weeks (28 days) of vacation per academic year (PGY2-4).

Sample PGY2 Schedule

  • 2-3 months of inpatient general neurology
  • 2-3 months of inpatient stroke neurology
  • About 2 months of night float
  • 1 month of neurocritical care
  • 1-1.5 months of ambulatory rotation
  • 1.5-2 months of outpatient neurology
  • 1 month of child neurology
  • 1 month of vacation
     

Sample PGY3 Schedule

  • 1-2 months of inpatient stroke neurology
  • 1-2 months of inpatient general neurology
  • 2 months of child neurology
  • 1-2 months of night float
  • 2 months of outpatient neurology
  • 2 weeks of psychiatry consults at LBVA
  • 1 month of electives
  • 1 month of neurocritical care
  • 1 month of vacation

Sample PGY4 Schedule

  • 1-2 months of inpatient general neurology
  • 1-2 months of inpatient stroke neurology
  • 1-1.5 months of night float
  • 3 months of outpatient neurology
  • 2 months of electives
  • 2 weeks of psychiatry consults at LBVA
  • 1 month vacation

The program includes regular lectures on topics of interest to neurology trainees. 

Daily Noon Lectures consisting of the following: 

  • EEG/Epilepsy Talks, Mondays 
  • Senior Relevant Talks, Tuesdays 
  • Junior & Senior Relevant Talks, Wednesdays
  • Junior Relevant Talks, Thursdays 
  • RITE Review, High Yield Board Topics, Wellness events, Post-Residency (jobs, fellowships, finance, etc), Fridays 

In addition: 

  • Morning Report, Thursdays 8-9 am 
  • Stroke Journal Club - Fourth Thursday of the month, 4-5pm 
  • Neuroradiology conference, Wednesdays, 9-10am 
  • Neurovascular conference, Thursdays, 5-6pm 
  • Grand Rounds and Morbidity & Mortality, Fridays, 8-9am 

Optional didactics include Tumor Board, Epilepsy Surgical Conference, Neuromuscular Pathology Conference, and Neuro ICU Teachings (Wednesdays 2-3pm)
