The Douglas Hospital of the UCI medical campus is a large tertiary care teaching hospital with a Level I Trauma Center and 411-bed capacity. We are the only academic center in the Orange County area, serving a large patient population and acting as a major referral center from surrounding counties. By virtue of the exceptionally diverse patient populations we serve, our residents are given a broad range of clinical experience. Our stellar faculty of more than 50 clinicians, scientists and clinician-scientists has trained in reputable and competitive institutions across the country, providing the best intellectual and technological resources for resident training. We have a strong representation of all subspecialties in neurology with the following centers and units: Comprehensive stroke center Level IV comprehensive epilepsy center Nationally recognized ALS and neuromuscular center Divisions of Behavioral Neurology, Neuro-oncology and Neuroimmunology Movement disorders program State-of-the-art neurocritical care unit The UC Irvine Neurology Residency Program remains committed to a robust training that has and will continue to prepare a community of academic leaders of neurology across the country. I would be comfortable with any of our graduates taking care of my family and me. -—Masaki Nagamine, MD, Neurology Residency Program Director Get to Know Our Program Meet the Program Director Masaki Nagamine, MD, is a board-certified UCI Health vascular neurologist and neurohospitalist who specializes in the evaluation and management of acute neurologic conditions. Nagamine earned his medical degree at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Mich. He completed an internship in internal medicine at UCI Medical Center, where he also completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in vascular neurology. He has published research on stroke care, including the use of artificial intelligence-based imaging on brain hemorrhages. His research interests also include leading-edge therapies in the treatment of stroke and optimizing inpatient neurologic care. Nagamine, who is fluent in Japanese, sees patients at UCI Medical Center in Orange. Nagamine served as Neurology Residency’s Assistant Program Director from 2022–2025, and became the Neurology Residency Program Director at the start of the 2025–2026 academic year.
