With world-class neurology, neurosurgery and critical care specialists, UC Irvine has established multidisciplinary clinical care programs across the wide range of neurological disorders. This is an exciting time for advancing the field of neurology. Innovative Research The Department of Neurology is home to leading-edge research programs. We have Orange County’s largest clinical trials portfolio involving all areas of neurosciences, testing new stem cell-derived treatments, gene therapies and more. Our stem cell research program combines neural stem cell biology and bioengineering to study processes critical to successful transplantation. Brain-computer interfaces are under development in an effort to treat stroke survivors. A new Center for Neurotherapeutics and Neurodegeneration Collaboratory is identifying and developing novel treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, ALS and related incurable disorders. Understanding Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases is also a focus of our biomarkers and epidemiology research programs, which are contributing to a precision neurology approach. Our stroke research has successfully delineated previously unexplored risk factors such as kidney disease. Efforts to better understand the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis have led to new clinical trials of novel therapeutics. Translational research is helping better understand mechanisms underlying consciousness, which may result in improved coma treatment. Our Neuroinformatics Lab is pioneering predictive analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to leverage improvements in research design and clinical outcomes. With our intradepartmental research programs, as well as multiple collaborations with the Chao Cancer Center, the Stem Cell Research Institute, the School of Engineering and others on our powerhouse campus, we are committed to providing exceptional clinical care, expanding options for treatment and improving future health. EXPLORE OUR RESEARCH Training Future Experts Our educational programs cover all stages of training. Residents and fellows benefit from highly regarded programs that prepare them for a career in neurology, with subspecialty training available. Medical students rotate through a dedicated Neurology clerkship, with elective opportunities available to supplement their expertise. Our graduate medical education programs include a fully accredited four-year residency program and fellowships in clinical neurophysiology, epilepsy, geriatric neurology/cognitive disorders, movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology, neurocritical care, neuromuscular medicine, and stroke and vascular neurology. We are proud to train the next generation of clinicians, clinician-scientists and clinician-educators to expertly care for patients with the full spectrum of neurological conditions, and to equip them with the skills to incorporate rapidly advancing research and new technologies into patient care. We also provide opportunities for research training through National Research Service Awards (T32 grants). Our faculty members’ teaching expertise is recognized through our involvement in regional, national and international initiatives in professional education, with a strong presence in neurological and subspecialty societies.
