Faculty from UC Irvine authored the first textbook in this field. This fellowship, the first in the country to offer an interdepartmental hospital-based curriculum, is designed to provide high-quality, advanced education in hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology focused on maximizing patient safety. It provides a strong blend of clinical, surgical and healthcare systems training in both academic and community-based hospital settings. Fellowship Tracks Our fellowship offers two tailored training pathways: One-Year Track Designed for physicians interested in gaining skills to excel in hospital medicine. Two-Year Track Designed for physicians interested in leadership roles in their field. Fellows in this track graduate with a Master’s in Applied Science in Patient Safety and Quality. Fellow Responsibilities Key responsibilities for fellows include: Providing Patient Care Teaching Clinical Programs Performing University and Public Service Demonstrating Professional Competency and Activity Fellows will rotate through a high-risk labor and delivery unit and consult in the emergency room and other units at the university hospital. They will also have significant exposure to a community-based private practice population. Learning Objectives Become clinically proficient, as documented by milestones and checklists Develop and implement protocols, tools and/or clinical pathways that result in the enhancement of patient safety and quality care in the hospital Master the dynamics of working within the academic and community healthcare systems as physician extenders Supervise and teach residents and medical students in the hospital setting at UCI Medical Center Collaborate with and assist private community physicians at St. Joseph Hospital Develop expertise in drills and simulation (in situ and lab training) Attend quality and safety committee meetings at UC Irvine and St. Joseph Hospital Assume leadership roles in hospital-based initiatives Complete a formal research project in an area of interest with research defense and research presentation Complete a master’s in applied science in patient safety and quality (two-year track only) Clinical Experience Obstetric anesthesia experience Hospitalist shifts Gynecology service and surgeries Surgical intensive care unit Elective Administrative days Simulation lab, Grand Rounds, resident statistics and didactics How to Apply To be eligible, candidates must meet the following criteria: Completion of an accredited four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology Foreign medical graduates must hold a standard ECFMG certificate and have completed postgraduate training in the U.S. Fellows must have a California medical license and be board-eligible or board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
