UC Irvine School of Medicine’s Ob-Gyn Hospitalist Fellowship was one of the first two programs offered in the country. Faculty from UC Irvine authored the first textbook in this field.

This fellowship, the first in the country to offer an interdepartmental hospital-based curriculum, is designed to provide high-quality, advanced education in hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology focused on maximizing patient safety. It provides a strong blend of clinical, surgical and healthcare systems training in both academic and community-based hospital settings. 
 

  • Become clinically proficient, as documented by milestones and checklists
  • Develop and implement protocols, tools and/or clinical pathways that result in the enhancement of patient safety and quality care in the hospital
  • Master the dynamics of working within the academic and community healthcare systems as physician extenders
  • Supervise and teach residents and medical students in the hospital setting at UCI Medical Center
  • Collaborate with and assist private community physicians at St. Joseph Hospital
  • Develop expertise in drills and simulation (in situ and lab training)
  • Attend quality and safety committee meetings at UC Irvine and St. Joseph Hospital
  • Assume leadership roles in hospital-based initiatives
  • Complete a formal research project in an area of interest with research defense and research presentation
  • Complete a master’s in applied science in patient safety and quality (two-year track only)
  • Obstetric anesthesia experience
