Applicant Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following requirements: 

  • Graduate of an LCME- or COCA-accredited medical school (U.S. MD or DO) or an ECFMG-certified international medical graduate
  • Completion of USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK (or COMLEX equivalents) prior to application submission
  • Preference is given to: 
    • Recent graduates (within the last 3 years). 
    • Good academic performance. 
    • Demonstrated interest in Family Medicine, underserved care and working with diverse communities.

Application Process 

  • Applications are accepted only through ERAS
  • All supporting documents (MSPE, transcripts, letters of recommendation) must be transmitted via ERAS in compliance with AAMC policies. 
  • Communication with applicants will occur through ERAS or email for clarifications only

Interview Process 

  • Interview Invitations: Sent on a rolling basis starting late September. All invitations will be issued by early December, unless a previously scheduled applicant cancels. 
  • Interview Format: All interviews are virtual (live video format). No asynchronous interviews will be used. 
  • Second Looks: We do not offer in-person second looks until after the rank list is completed. Attendance at second looks will not influence ranking in compliance with NRMP guidelines. 
  • Technology Requirements: Applicants must ensure a stable internet connection, functioning webcam and quiet environment for virtual interviews. 

Communication Policy 

  • The program adheres to the NRMP Match Communication Code of Conduct
  • No solicitation of ranking preferences or commitments. 
  • No coercive or misleading communication. 
  • No requirement for second visits or additional interactions beyond the interview. 
  • Our program does not initiate post-interview communication unless seeking clarification.

Ethical Standards 

  • All interactions will comply with ERAS Integrity Promotion Program and NRMP Match Codes of Conduct to ensure fairness and transparency.
  • Interviewers will receive training on implicit bias mitigation and prohibited questions (e.g., age, marital status, religion). 

Resident Benefits & Salary

International medical school graduates must include proof of passing scores on both the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Federation Licensing Examination (FLEX) and Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) examinations and a copy of your current ECFMG certificate. Applicants who are not U.S. citizens need to provide proof of employment eligibility.

Please include a current Medical Board of California letter stating that you are eligible to commence postgraduate training in California and a current Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate. The university will not sponsor J-1 or H-1B visas for postgraduate medical education training. Clinical experience with supportive letters in the United States is strongly recommended for international graduates.

Please be aware that by participating in the National Resident Matching Program, you are applying for a first-year residency position only. If you feel that you may be eligible for an advanced position within our program, please inform us promptly. Otherwise, if you participate in the NRMP and are matched with us, we will consider this a binding agreement for you to enter our program as a first-year resident.
