The UC Irvine Emergency Medicine Residency Program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All applications and required documents must be submitted electronically through ResidencyCAS, and an application is considered complete once the following documents are received:

  • Completed ResidencyCAS Application Form
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation (LoRs)
    • We highly recommend that two (2) of these be group Standardized Letters of Evaluation (SLOEs) from emergency medicine rotations completed at emergency medicine residency program sites, as these provide the best insight into an applicant’s qualifications and ability to work in an emergency department.
    • Non-traditional applicants who are unable to obtain group SLOEs are considered with three traditional LoRs and no SLOEs.
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
  • Medical School Transcripts
  • Allopathic (M.D.) Board Exam Transcript(s): USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2-Clinical Knowledge (CK)
  • Osteopathic (D.O.) Board Exam Transcript(s): COMLEX-USA Level 1, COMLEX-USA Level 2 Cognitive Evaluation (CE) and USMLE Step 2-CK
  • Personal Statement

Medical Education Requirement

To be eligible for licensure in California, applicants must have received all of their medical school education from and graduated from a: (1) U.S. or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME), the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools or the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation; or LCME Accredited U.S. Programs, (2) a foreign medical school listed on the World Directory of Medical Schools or (3) a foreign medical school that has been approved by the Medical Board of California (Board). Additional information on this is available from the Medical Board of California

Virtual Interview Days and Socials

Interviews are by invitation only and are typically scheduled on Wednesdays, from late October through mid-December, in Pacific Standard Time (PST). Our medical student chief resident(s) usually host one to two in-person social events between January and February to maximize resident turnout and foster a lively atmosphere for all attendees. Additional details are shared with scheduled applicants during the interview season.

To promote an equitable and transparent selection process, the UC Irvine Emergency Medicine Residency Program follows the AAMC recommendation to use a virtual interview format for the recruitment season. Hybrid interviewing (a combination of virtual and in-person interviews by a single program) is not permitted, as it may lead to inequities arising from applicants’ differing resources and abilities to attend in person.

Any in-person visits or 'second looks' only occur after the program has completed all interviews and 'locked' the rank order list (ROL). If the NRMP has not yet enabled the 'locking' option, the program makes every effort to comply with this restriction. The rank order list is not altered following any in-person visits, and applicants are not required to attend these visits. In-person visits do not impact the program’s rank order list.
