High School & Undergraduate Education The UCI Medical Center and UC Irvine School of Medicine jointly encourage and support high school and undergraduate student participation in basic science laboratories and clinical research projects. Bio Sci 199 Bio Sci 199 is an opportunity for undergraduate students to perform supervised undergraduate research alongside a mentor while earning graded research units. For more information about the program, including research project guidelines, how to apply and student expectations, please visit the Bio Sci 199 Undergraduate Research website. Visit Bio Sci 199 Scientific Clinical Research Internship Program (SCRIP) – only for high school students over age 16 and non-UC Irvine undergraduate students The Scientific Clinical Research Internship Program (SCRIP) offers a volunteer, non-credit course administered by departments within UCI Health and UC Irvine School of Medicine. This is an opportunity to experience research as an intern under the direct supervision of an eligible faculty member in the School of Medicine. Participants have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in biomedical research settings. We welcome all participants interested in this opportunity and look forward to having you in our labs during the fall, spring, winter and summer quarters. Visit SCRIP MD Student Education A list of all available MD program electives is available on the Medical Program Electives website. View List Observership/Shadowing Opportunities Our department also offers a clinical observership, which is an opportunity for students to gain educational experience in the area of neuroscience. Clinical observership does not involve patient contact and patient care. Specific documents are required to be cleared for observership. For detailed information regarding the eligibility criteria and guidelines for participating in a clinical observership within our department, please refer to the attached policy document. View Policy Document FAQ Could you please outline the procedural steps required to obtain clearance for the observership program? Once you read through the policy on our website, please reach out to Sierra Curry (currysm@hs.uci.edu) to begin the required paperwork to be cleared for an observership. Upon submission and verification of all required documentation, and confirmation that the applicant meets all eligibility criteria, the candidate will be scheduled for an in-person Operating Room (OR) Orientation. Following successful completion of the OR Orientation, the program coordinator will grant clearance and provide the candidate with detailed instructions via email for scheduling observership sessions with their preferred faculty member. What is the minimum age requirement for eligibility in this program? The minimum age requirement for the program is 18 years old. Could you please provide information regarding the faculty member(s) I will be assigned to shadow during the observership program? Please review our faculty directory and select a faculty member whose area of expertise aligns with your observership interests. This selection will guide the assignment of your shadowing experience. What is the maximum duration permitted for the observership program, and are there any limitations on the length of individual shadowing sessions? The standard duration for our observership program typically ranges from one to three months. This timeframe is designed to optimize learning opportunities while ensuring equitable access for all prospective observers and maintaining an appropriate observer-to-faculty ratio. Participants who wish to extend their observership beyond the standard duration may request to do so. Such extensions may be granted based on availability and at the discretion of the department, taking into account the current capacity and scheduling constraints.
