Students gain hands-on experience by assisting faculty with active research projects and may be tasked with: Initiating the informed consent process Collecting and cleaning data for analysis Supporting the development of abstracts or manuscripts for publication Note: The program does not provide exclusive clinical shadowing opportunities. Any clinical exposure is not guaranteed and may be revoked if program expectations, rules or regulations are not followed. Research Program Undergraduate students accepted into the program will be enrolled through the following: Bio Sci 199 Program Earn school credit while conducting research under faculty supervision. BIO SCI 199 Minimum Requirements Be a current UC Irvine undergraduate Have completed high school While current high school students are not eligible for the Anesthesiology Student Research Program, there are opportunities available in other departments through the UC Irvine Scientific Clinical Research Internship Program (SCRIP). Must commit to a minimum of two units (four hours per unit) for one academic year Be available for shifts between four to six hours, at least two days a week (no shifts available during university holidays) Application Process We accept new Bio 199 students once per year for the Fall quarter only. Applications are reviewed between May and June. Select candidates will be invited for an interview. Due to the highly competitive nature of this program, available placements are limited. Frequently Asked Questions Do I need prior research experience or experience with patients before I can apply? While prior research and/or patient interaction would be ideal, students without direct experience should still apply. Students should leverage skills from work or volunteer experience. All applicants should have a basic knowledge of general research procedures. Can I split up my shifts for the day? No. Depending on the day, students are expected at 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday or 7:30 a.m. on Thursdays. The four-hour shift minimum is consecutive and cannot be split up during the day. My schedule currently does not work with the stated research hours. Should I change my classes to accommodate volunteering? No. Do not adjust your schedule to accommodate available research hours, as we cannot guarantee space or that you will be selected. We are not responsible for any scheduling errors or conflicts. I am waitlisted for a class and I am unsure if my schedule will work. Should I still reach out? Yes. We understand the difficulty in getting into necessary courses. Please let us know in your application submission that you are currently waitlisted for a class and your schedule is subject to change. I already reached out to a member of the department and they say I can work with them. Should I still submit an application? Yes, you must still apply through the official research program. Students are NOT permitted to reach out directly to any faculty, residents, fellows or staff to request research opportunities. Even if a department member has expressed interest in working with you, the arrangement cannot move forward without proper enrollment through our official application process. This circumvents the volunteer procedures and we will NOT accept any students who have not inquired about availability through our application process. There are no exceptions. I am a graduating senior. Am I still eligible to apply? Graduating students may apply if they can commit to three consecutive quarters of research. Due to our extensive onboarding process and the complexity of our research procedures, we require a substantial time commitment. Upon graduation, graduate students can apply for a volunteer researcher position. I am only available in the summer, can I still apply? Yes. Summer-only research is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Priority is given to eligible non-UC Irvine students whose university and/or college is not local, and students are expected to return for an additional summer. I am a high school student. Am I eligible for the Anesthesiology Student Research Program? No. The Anesthesiology Student Research Program is only open to UC Irvine undergraduates. High school students are not eligible for this particular program. While high school students are not eligible for the Anesthesiology Student Research Program, there are opportunities available in other departments through the UC Irvine Scientific Clinical Research Internship Program (SCRIP).
