We utilize the latest technology and personalized assessments to create evidence-based treatments that enable patients to return to their daily activities with less pain and improved function. Our Fellows gain the skills and knowledge needed to become competent and compassionate healthcare providers, making a positive impact on the lives of their patients. Diverse Musculoskeletal Training in an NCAA Division I Academic Setting Here at UCI, we strive to develop sound clinicians, skilled team physicians and effective teachers to lead the next generation of Sports Medicine physicians. Our philosophy leadership skills in healthcare are also taught, to prepare our graduates to thrive in diverse career paths, ranging from academics to elite sports and industry. Robust Sports Medicine Experiences Core rotations include Primary Care and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, including a Sports clinic at a Federally Qualified Health Center Specialty rotations include MSK Radiology, Neurology Concussion/Head and ALS, Nutrition, Orthopaedic Foot/Ankle and Hand, Pediatric Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy, PM&R Pain Management and Rheumatology Extensive training in ultrasound and procedures Event Coverage Opportunities Our program offers diverse exposure in medical event coverage, including NCAA Division I, high school, mass participation events and professional/elite sports. Fellows participate in the following event coverage: AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) Big West Conference Tournaments Ironman 70.3 Oceanside Triathlon X-Games UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge UCI Rugby and other Club Sports UCI Zot Trot Triathlon Team Physician Training Fellows serve as a team physician for UC Irvine Athletics, including dedicated training room hours and team coverage. Fellows also serve as a team physician for a local HS athletics football program. Support for Research/Education Fellows have dedicated research faculty support for scholarly and QI projects, as well as support for attendance at the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Annual Meeting and AMSSM Fellows Research and Leadership Conference. We will be accepting two Fellows for the 2027-2028 academic year. We accept applicants who have completed an ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency. What is the length of the Fellowship? Our Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year program starting July 15th. Will I receive training in sports ultrasound? Many of our faculty are well-versed in sports ultrasound and utilize it regularly in the clinical setting. Our program also features a dedicated longitudinal ultrasound didactic curriculum. What are the responsibilities of the Fellow within UC Irvine Athletics? Fellows will play an integral role as a team physician, working closely with Athletics staff to deliver care to athletes in the training room, provide event coverage, and help organize and staff other events. Is there time allotted for teaching and scholarly activity? Fellows are provided one to two half-days per week of protected academic time to prepare for teaching sessions, presentations, research and other scholarly activities.
