Among the First to Offer Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT)

UC Irvine Radiation Oncology began offering intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for cancer patients in the early 1990s and has a long track record of irradiating tumors using this sophisticated technology. UC Irvine was also one of the first to implement respiratory gating using breath hold for patients with tumors close to the lung and heart.

First to Implement a 3D Visualization Technology for Accurate Positioning of Radiation Therapy

UC Irvine Radiation Oncology was the first center in Southern California to implement the Ambient patient experience and use AlignRT. This proprietary 3D visualization system has eliminated the necessity of once-widely used tattoos and provides clear positional guidance from multiple angles to enhance patient positioning and precision.

GammaTile & Flash Electron Unit

The department started its GammaTile program in 2021. The installation of the FLASH electron unit is an important step forward. Once installed, UC Irvine will have the third unit in the country, allowing investigators to pioneer new treatments.
